Councilwoman Jan Perry will joined the community to celebrate the City’s Historic designation of the Episcopal Church of St. Philip the Evangelist and unveil signs to commemorate this community treasure. The signs serve as the official designation of the church as the City of Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission Cultural Monument Number 987.
In 2010, Councilwoman Perry brought the historic designation proposal before the Cultural Heritage Commission where it received support for this important recognition. The church was dedicated in 1929 and is designed in the architectural style of Spanish Colonial Revival with a modified gable roof shape and casement windows.
Founded in 1910, St. Philips Church is the oldest historically African-American congregation in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and counted such legends as African-American architect, Paul R. Williams, as a member of its congregation.
