Councilmember Jan Perry applauds President Obama for immigration reform efforts

June 15th, 2012

Los Angeles— Today Councilwoman Jan Perry applauded President Obama’s move to cease deportation of young people and offer them a pathway to legalization.

“For far too long our outdated immigration laws have divided families and punished young people by ripping them away from the country, family, and community that they have grown up with and loved. Today’s announcement is an incredible step in the right direction and I applaud our President for moving us forward on immigration reform,” said Councilwoman Perry.

Perry also supports President Obama’s efforts to urge Congress to pass the stalled “Dream Act” legislation: “For the past eleven years, I have witnessed first-hand the need for comprehensive immigration reform on the national level. We have to be proactive and look for ways to provide greater stability for the families and young people who have been here for years, working hard to achieve the American dream. They are important members of our community. The Dream Act legislation will create a pathway to a real future for the young people of Los Angeles.”

Councilwoman Perry represents the Ninth Council District, which encompasses the most culturally diverse and vibrant communities in Los Angeles, including Bunker Hill, Little Tokyo, and South Los Angeles
